Back Pain: Understanding It, Treating It, and Getting Back to What You Love
Back pain is one of the most common health concerns in Australia — affecting up to 1 in 6 Australians at any given time. Whether yours started after lifting something heavy, crept in from long hours at a desk, or appeared without an obvious cause, the good news is that most back pain improves significantly with the right care.
At Hiya Health, we see people every day who are frustrated by back pain limiting the things they love — playing with their kids, staying active, or simply getting through a work day comfortably. Our approach is simple: understand what’s driving your pain, build a plan around your goals, and get you moving well again.

What Causes Back Pain?
Back pain can come from many sources, and it’s rarely as straightforward as a single “thing gone wrong.” Some of the most common contributors include:
- Muscle and ligament strains — from sudden movements, lifting, or overuse
- Disc-related issues — such as bulging or herniated discs, which can irritate nearby nerves
- Joint stiffness or degeneration — common as we age, but not a reason to stop moving
- Poor movement patterns — repetitive postures or habits that place extra load on certain structures
- Deconditioning — a lack of strength and flexibility in the muscles that support the spine
- Stress and lifestyle factors — sleep, stress, and general health all play a role in how we experience pain
The important thing to know is that the presence of pain does not always equal damage. Research consistently shows that many structural changes seen on scans — like disc bulges — are also found in people with no pain at all. A thorough clinical assessment is the best way to understand what’s happening and what to do about it.
When Should I See a Physio for Back Pain?
While some episodes of back pain settle on their own within a few days, there are times when professional support can make a real difference. Consider booking in if:
- Your pain has lasted longer than a few weeks
- It’s affecting your ability to work, exercise, or sleep
- You’re experiencing pain, numbness, or tingling down your leg
- Your pain keeps coming back, even after rest
- You want to understand what’s causing it and how to prevent it returning
Early intervention often leads to faster recovery. Our physiotherapists are trained to assess, diagnose, and treat back pain — no GP referral is needed to get started.
How We Treat Back Pain at Hiya Health
We don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. Every back is different, and every person has different goals. Our clinicians take the time to understand your story before building a tailored plan that gets results.
Thorough Assessment
Your first session includes a comprehensive movement and physical assessment. We look at how you move, where your pain is coming from, and what factors might be contributing — including work habits, activity levels, and lifestyle.
Hands-On Treatment

Manual therapy techniques — including joint mobilisation, soft tissue work, and dry needling — can help reduce pain and restore movement in the short term. We use these to complement your active rehabilitation, not replace it.
Active Rehabilitation
This is where lasting change happens. We prescribe targeted exercises to strengthen the muscles that support your spine, improve flexibility, and build resilience against future episodes. Our clinics are equipped with fully fitted gym spaces so you can progress your exercises under guidance.
Education and Self-Management
Understanding your pain is one of the most powerful tools in your recovery. We help you make sense of what’s happening, challenge unhelpful beliefs about your back, and give you strategies to manage flare-ups with confidence.
Beyond Physio: Our Multi-Disciplinary Approach
Sometimes back pain benefits from more than physiotherapy alone. At Hiya Health, you have access to a full team of allied health professionals under one roof:
- Exercise Physiology — for longer-term strengthening programs, chronic pain management, and return-to-sport or work conditioning
- Hydrotherapy — warm water-based exercise that reduces load on the spine while building strength and mobility
- Clinical Pilates — targeted core and spinal stability work guided by qualified clinicians
- Occupational Therapy — for workplace assessments and ergonomic modifications
- Dietetics — because nutrition and inflammation play a role in pain and recovery
Your clinician will guide you toward the right combination of services based on your needs — no need to figure it out on your own.
Funding Options for Back Pain Treatment
We want to make quality care accessible. Depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible for support through:
- Medicare — with a GP referral and Chronic Disease Management Plan, you can access up to 5 subsidised allied health sessions per year
- WorkCover — if your back pain is work-related, treatment may be fully covered under your claim
- DVA — Department of Veterans’ Affairs covers physiotherapy and exercise physiology for eligible veterans
- NDIS — for participants with back pain as part of a broader disability or chronic condition
- Private Health Insurance — claim on the spot with HICAPS at all our clinics
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a referral to see a physio for back pain?
No. You can book directly with one of our physiotherapists without a GP referral. However, if you’d like to access Medicare rebates, you will need a referral and a Chronic Disease Management Plan from your GP.
Do I need a scan before my appointment?
In most cases, no. Your physiotherapist can assess your back thoroughly without imaging. If a scan is needed, your physio can advise you and arrange a referral.
How many sessions will I need?
This varies depending on the nature and duration of your pain. Some people feel significant improvement in 2–3 sessions, while more complex or chronic presentations may benefit from a longer programme. Your clinician will discuss a realistic timeline at your first appointment.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely. Bring any relevant imaging reports, your Medicare or health insurance card, and a referral if you have one.

All 10 of our clinics across South East Queensland offer physiotherapy for back pain, including Beenleigh, Burleigh Heads, Caboolture, Cleveland, Ipswich, Labrador, Paddington, Redcliffe, Sunnybank Hills, and Greenbank.
